Sweet Innocence

The other night we were watching The Grinch on tv.

L: "The Grinch is mean, just like the stepmother on Cinderella."
Me: "Yes, he is."
L: "That's not nice."
Me: "No, it's not. It's not nice to be mean to other people. God doesn't like it when people are mean like that."
L: "Yes."
*pause for a few minutes*
L: (wagging her finger the way she does when she's trying to make a point)"But that's ok. When it's my turn to go to Heaven, I will just tell God that it's ok. The Grinch is just a show."

I guess The Grinch is pretty lucky. Without Lauryn there to explain and smooth things over, it wouldn't be pretty. He's got quite a laundry list, what with all the scheming, lying, and stealing of Who Hash.

And on another note, what is with these Christmas specials having not-so-great role models? After watching A Charlie Brown Christmas for the millionth time, she referred to a "stupid blanket" earlier this evening.

I had a feeling it was coming. Lucy probably says the word "stupid" 67 times in that 30 minute show. And I heard "stupid blanket" with my own ears the last time we watched it.

So we had to have the talk. She felt bad that she had said something she wasn't supposed to. I felt bad that she felt bad.

I just wish she would stay this innocent forever. And that the only "S" word she ever hears will come from a Christmas cartoon on tv.

oh my gosh. are you saying all you ad to do was explain it away and she stopped saying it? why doesn't that work with my kids? it seems like if i calmly and patiently explain to them that it is a bad word, their little brains think "sweet! i will say it more often! just another way to push mommy's buttons!"
