Countdown to Five

I can't even believe I'm about to do this, because that would mean that what I've been trying to ignore is about to happen.

My first born child will be five years old in five days.

So, every post I write from now until Thursdsay will involve some sort of obnoxious bragging or ridiculous blubbering about my baby girl and the fact that, despite all my efforts, she is a great big grown up kid. She has friends losing teeth and will have kindergarten registration later this month.

Oh, my heart.

Let's start with a little old-fashioned bragging and save the sappy stuff for later. Here is my list for the past two days:

1. I Can Read with My Eyes Shut!
2. The Story of Easter
3. How Do Dinosaurs Learn to Read?
4. The Going to Bed Book
5. Biscuit and the Baby
6. Good Morning!
7. How Do Dinosaurs Learn their Colors?
8. Biscuit's Christmas
9. Little Bunny's Bedtime
10. Little Quack's Hide and Seek
11. Green Eggs and Ham
12. Loose Tooth
13. Ten Apples up on Top
14. Old Hat New Hat

This is a list of the books that Lauryn has read to me in the past two days.

I have to say, this kid amazes me (I warned you that bragging was in store)!

As a former teacher, I feel like I have a little insight to the process of learning to read. So it has been so fun to watch this skill develop as both her mom and as an educator. I can also say with confidence that I had about 30% involvement with her learning to read. We worked on letters and sounds a little, but one day she just started reading. It clicked. And then it took off.

She loves to read and is very good at it. She uses context clues to figure out words instead of guessing or sounding each letter out. 9 times out of 10 she gets it right. Words like "friend", "two", and "about"...she just knows.

Come on over and have my almost five year old read to you some time.

We charge $2 admission.

Well I feel very lucky to say that she read to me for free! She is so stinking smart and I love it!

That is so precious. My mom has a tape of me "reading" (I'm pretty sure I just had it memorized) Gregory the Terrible Eater when I was 3.
