Long Overdue

So, usually I just write about the girls, but today I figured I would change things up a bit and write about Brent and me. I meant to write about this weeks ago, but then, you know, life happened. So here it is, finally.

A while back we had the opportunity to have a night out. Not just any night out, but a fancy night out where we dressed up, ate a 5 course dinner, and attended a casino night in one of the best resort hotels ever created. It was definitely a night we will always remember.

Unfortunately it won't be remembered by looking at all of the wonderful pictures taken that evening. Because I left my camera at home.

So we bought an "old fashioned" disposable camera at the gift shop in the hotel. We took about 5 pictures and got bored with it. There is just something about a digital camera and being able to see your picture immediately. It's like a modern day Polaroid.

You can choose to keep the picture after previewing it, or you can get rid of it right then and there. I like that option. I didn't have that option that night, so the camera went into my purse and never again saw the light of day.

That very camera is still sitting in the kitchen drawer because I'm too lazy I don't have the time to get the film developed.

We were fortunate enough to get this lovely photograph that captured the memory of that glorious evening. And it really was a fantastic evening, though I can't say the same thing for this picture.

We waited in line for about 30 minutes, only to find ourselves standing in front of a "green screen". Thinking that couldn't possibly be the real backdrop, our thoughts were confirmed when we went to pick up our picture and found this cheesy holiday photo card with our image digitally imposed over a starry border.

We look like cardboard cutouts. But what do you want for a free picture.

Anyway, the evening was so much fun. It was something we hadn't ever done before, and we were able to spend the night at the hotel because my wonderful mother-in-law stayed at our house with the girls! So instead of waking up at 6:30 to the sound of our chatty three year old, we woke up at 6:30 to the sound of someone else's chatty screaming child. I suppose someone thought it might be a good idea to take their young (and very upset) child into the atrium of a huge resort hotel at 6:30 in the morning.

We managed to go back to sleep until almost 8:00! Then we had a breakfast buffet and ate more food than should be legally allowed in one sitting.

It was a wonderful time for us and gave us some much needed rest and relaxation.

The best part was the gift I got from Brent the night before our little getaway.

In case you can't immediately tell what that is, it is a handmade foot slougher (a technical term), made with love by my sweet husband.

A little background: In the days leading up to our big night, I realized I didn't have fancy shoes to go with my fancy dress.

So we headed to the mall and I tried on the cutest pair of shoes. They were black with a high heel, and had some fancy "bling" on the straps. Perfect.

So I go to try them on, and take off my shoes. Then my socks. Looking back, that is not something I should have done in the presence of others, especially young and impressionable children.

To say my feet were dry and needed a little bit of work would be the understatement of the year.

I quickly slipped the shoe on, determined that it did, in fact, fit. And we checked out and left the store. No words needed to be said, because we were both thinking the same thing. Some serious work needed to be done before I could even think of showing those feet in public.

Later that night I casually mentioned that perhaps the problem might be that my current foot slougher must be old and not working well. Probably the fact that I hadn't used it in approximately 3 months didn't help either.

So Brent disappears for a while and returns bearing this beautiful gift. A homemade foot slougher. Who would have thought that a wooden paint stirrer and a little sandpaper could come together to work perfect magic.

You wouldn't believe it when I tell you how completely different my feet looked and that I was actually PROUD to wear strappy shoes in the middle of winter! My sweet husband. He always knows exactly what I need.

The funniest part was when he handed it over and actually said to me, "Now be very careful. That thing can really take some skin off." Thanks honey. Little did he know that taking some skin off was my one and only goal. At least three layers.

We've been married almost 9 years, and still, the little things he does for me and surprises me with are just neverending. And isn't it really all the little things that make life wonderful!?

Oh my gosh. That is so sweet and hilarious! What a good hubby. I hope he used some STRONG sandpaper.

I would just like to clarify and say that I meant "I hope he used some STRONG sandpaper...if your feet are anything like mine!"

ha! so cute, and so sweet. Yes, the picture does look like a very low budget prom pic, although you 2 are cute. Anyway, love the story...what a sweet husband you have! I still remember the day we were standing in the band hall and you told me you liked him. :)

haha, I like how Meredith brought up old-school bandhall stories!! And yes, it was sweet of Brent to make that for you... why didnt you just call me and ask to use my closet full of pedicure supplies?? =)

I think exfoliation must be a "love language" at your house. I still owe you parrafin for your feet! I do recall Brent requesting that you take care of that.

What a sweet hubby you have!

I guess the way to your heart is through your feet. :) But I really think you should have taken a before and after of the feet - you know, to make Brent realize just how much you appreciated the gesture. But serioiusly, I am constantly overwhelmed by the blessing of a loving and dedicated husband. We're missing you guys...hope to be germ free soon.
