Road Trip and Memories

We took our first BIG road trip last week when I drove with my mom, sister, and the girls to Iowa to visit family. The longest trip they have been on in the car was when we went to San Antonio for Spring Break.

I shouldn't be surprised, but the girls were AMAZING. Never whined or complained about wanting to get out of the car. Never fought (at least not very much). They adjusted to the complete craziness of being totally off schedule (we didn't get to bed until 10:30 or 11:00 on two different nights of our five day trip!)

I want to remember Lauryn especially, and the things she discovered on our trip. She had a lot of questions about death. Both of my grandpas are gone, so we visited two cemeteries while we were in Iowa. She had so much insight for such a young child, and she really picked up on the emotions of everyone around her. Several times she was in tears because she "missed" her Great-Grandpas and was sad that she didn't get to know them. She has such a compassionate, tender heart.

My paternal grandmother has moved to an assisted living facility. Again, it was emotional to go through the home she no longer lives in and see it virtually empty (they are cleaning out 50 years worth of belongings to get the house ready to sell). That house held so many memories for me from my childhood as we visited Iowa almost every summer while I was growing up. It was fun to share that with my girls and take their pictures in all the same places I used to play!

We took my grandma to lunch and had a really nice visit with her.

We shared many loving memories of both my Grandpas...
Sitting in front of their house, soon to be for sale.
Standing on the "big rock" that has been in their yard my entire life.
We also had a wonderful visit with my mom's mother. She is 92 and still living in the house my mom grew up in. She let the girls play with some of her shoes and ended up sending them home with a couple pairs. (She definitely can't walk in high heels anymore!)
Posing for pictures before church...

Lauryn took this picture! Three generations...
When I was a kid, I used to think this house was like a castle. Looking at how small my girls look on the front porch, I can see where I was coming from!

It's always so nice to go back and visit family. The girls visited with their great-grandmothers, great-aunts, and great-uncles and made some memories of their own. Priceless.

And now, on a COMPLETELY different subject, I have to include a few videos I've seen on other people's blogs. Hopefully at least one will make you smile :)

EDITED TO ADD: Not sure why half the videos are cut off but here is the direct link if you want to see the other half of the screen :)

I remember the big rock. Glad the girls had fun and glad they were good riders. It's so neat that you are able to have pics of them in those special places.

I'm so glad the drive was uneventful and that you girls had a great time! I think I've seen a few pictures around your house of you and Brent on that same couch. Pretty amazing when things come full circle. Glad you're back (for now!).
