A million thanks

Ok, two posts in one day! I guess this post will definitely cancel out the "Wordless Wednesday" theme!

So if you don't read the Steece quads, you should! That girl is amazing, and today I am so thankful that she posted THIS on her blog instead of following the crowd.

Just a few words (and trust me, I have more than a "few" but I also respect those who share a different opinion, so I will keep my strong feelings to myself) since it is my blog and also my place to ramble. But I promise to be nice and use very nice words.

I am thankful that Suzanne posted because right now we are bombarded with images and quotes from yesterday. I did watch the coverage and it was amazing. The reaction across our country, as well as the world, was something to see.

And for the record, I absolutely recognize the historical significance and what yesterday means to our country. And it is incredible. Something to be proud of, most definitely.

But (did you hear the "but" coming a mile away?!)...I can also appreciate the teeny, tiny snippets of coverage the Bushes received regarding their homecoming to Texas. Miraculous, actually, considering the way he has been treated by the media for the past 8 years. Something I would not wish on anyone.

He was handed a completely different job than he signed up for. And after 9/11, I appreciated having a God-fearing, prayerful leader in the White House. I believe he did the best he could with what he was given. Many respectfully (and some not so much) disagree with that opinion. And after all, it is only that.

Of course I wish our new president success. Is there really anyone out there who truly WANTS him to fail? Goodness, I hope not. But after being immersed with coverage yesterday, I am reminded of that well-known phrase (which I plan to begin drilling into my girls' heads the moment they enter public school):

"What is popular is not always right. And what is right is not always popular".

Goodness knows that our former president's decisions weren't always popular.

I am, quite frankly, a little tired of "popular" right now. As in "rock-star status". Don't get me wrong. I can appreciate a president who can Booty-Bump with a 9th grader at the inauguration. Get down on the kids' level. I get that.

Before we put someone on a pedestal, though, shouldn't he have to DO something first? Something worth recognizing? Maybe at least one full day of work experience under his belt?

On a side note, I'm truly afraid for Oprah. She is likely to go into cardiac arrest if she doesn't find a way to settle down.

I hear people comparing our new president to Abraham Lincoln. LINCOLN. He hasn't even started the job yet, friends. What could he have possibly done to deserve that kind of comparison? Just because I disagree with his politics (see how I'm using "nice" words like "disagree"!?) doesn't necessarily mean I think he will do everything wrong. But good grief, he's done NOTHING so far!

See what I mean about popular? Earning legendary status before completing a full-day's work. Strange. Why does no one else find that odd?

I do wish our president nothing but the best, and will pray for him endlessly. I hope, for all of our sakes, that he can live up to the image so many have created in their minds.

I also want to recognize that our former president has given almost a decade of his life for nothing in return. Nothing but a nation whose majority turned their back on the man who has kept us safe. How quickly we forget.

Oh, you said so many things I have been thinking. Someone said something about the chills she got watching him take office. The chill I got was watching Bush come home. I had tears when he was getting on Air Force One.

I don't know if you saw his last press conference, but he addressed his "popularity" and his lack of concern about it. My friends father-in-law was a texas ranger when Bush was gov. He said that the person he portrayed himself to be in public (caring, religious, humble) is exactly who he is in person and in private.

I hope that more people will some day realize that he really does love this country and would do ANYTHING to protect it.
