We were at a wonderfully fun reception for my friend Sarah and her husband Brian. Lauryn was having a blast in the bounce house, and we were enjoying visiting with some old friends.
Allison was also having a great time, just wandering around waving at people and being her overall happy self. She and Brent were even playing one of their favorite games. The one where she holds his hands and climbs up the front of him, then flips over back onto her feet. Both girls love to do this, and have done it a million times.
After the last "flip", Brent picked Allison up and about 30 seconds later she started sobbing. Nothing helped to console her. Not even Goldfish crackers or an offer to play in the bounce house.
Now you KNOW that's a problem.
We soon noticed that she wouldn't move her left arm at all. So we immediately gave each other "the look" and knew what had to happen. We left the party (crying 3 year old who wasn't done in the bounce house in tow) and headed straight for the ER.
She was immediately diagnosed with Nursemaid's Elbow, and it is apparently very common in children her age. Basically she had a dislocated elbow and the doctor promptly put it back in place, for lack of a better term. She cried a little at that part, but literally 10 seconds later she was completely fine. Smiling, even. The doctor wanted to make sure she was going to use her arm, so he left us for several minutes with the promise of a popsicle when he returned.
The nurse (not the doctor) discharged us, and there was not a popsicle in sight.
So, secure in the fact that we had claimed the title as Parents of the Year, we proceeded to drive home and give the girls the popsicles they didn't get at the hospital. At 9:30 at night. Before Easter.

We're just about ready to start writing the first edition in our series of parenting books. Hopefully they'll be out by this fall.

poor baby! Glad she got that popsicle. Those mean doctors!!
Awww! Poor Allie!! Now I feel really bad that I didn't hear my phone when you called last night! Glad she got everything "put back in place". And REALLY glad I wasnt the one playing with her when it popped out! :)
You know I'll be the 1st in line to buy that parenting book you speak of!
Glad Allie is A-OK!
Sweet Girl. It was so sad to see her crying at the party. Sorry I was "hiding" in the bathroom with my three year old and didn't get to say goodbye when you guys left. Glad everything turned out okay...somewhat.
Be assured that every parent who has written any kind of noteworthy parenting book has been through things like that AND WORSE! How else would they be qualified to write a book?!?!
And most importantly...always remember that it was all Brent's fault. :) Glad she's ok now. Although, she would still be precious with a deformed elbow.
You know you threw a good party when someone ends up in the ER. I'm just sayin.... ;)
Big hugs to Allie!!! We LOVED seeing you guys!!!!!!
Ohhhh...that sweet baby. I'm so glad she's doing okay, and I'm glad you got in and out relatively quickly. Gotta love Cooks!
