Finding our Roots

I love that my husband loves to be outside. Working in the yard and garden makes him sooo happy. And I love that it has rubbed off on our girls! They could spend hours outside with him digging in the dirt and inventing games with rocks and sticks. It's a quality they most certainly inherited from him.

Surely I have mentioned my dislike of the outdoors and anything involving dirt or sweat? That's what I thought.

Anyway, they are out there as I speak (or type) running around and loving the fresh air. As I sit in my quiet house, blogging, with nothing but the hum of the computer to distract me. I guess we all have our happy place. :)

It is a much more upbeat atmosphere around here this Sunday, as opposed to last Sunday. So we figured we'd take advantage of it by buying plants and getting things ready for the garden and backyard landscaping.

And quickly, before someone comes along and gets all up in our business and tells us what kinds of plants to buy, how many to buy, and how big our garden can be. And if we don't do what they say we'll be sorry. And most likely punished. You know, since we can't think for ourselves and make decisions for our family on our own, we apparently need someone to make the important decisions for us.

Oops. I was supposed to be in my happy place.

Getting back there...

Already starting to sprout! Brent and the girls planted some bell peppers and cucumbers and several other vegetables...and the seeds are sprouting! It was like Christmas morning!
While playing outside, Lauryn discovered an earthworm. She promptly named her "Charlotte", scooped her up into her "bug jar", and covered her with dirt.

Again, this is the same girl who was terrified of house flies two years ago.

Allie wanted her picture taken, too :)

Planting the hydrangeas!
About a month ago, Lauryn saw a tutorial at JoAnn about making signs for your garden. She wouldn't let the idea go, and her dream came to life when Brent helped her make the signs one rainy weekend last month. When the plants are ready to transfer to the garden, they'll all have an assigned seat! (Not in that planter, of course... :)
And I must share with you the greatest laugh of our day. One that will probably become an inside joke for a loooong time to come.
We were at the plant store looking at the hydrangeas. None of them had any flowers yet, so it was just a sea of dark green leaves in 3 gallon pots.
So we asked a very informed employee if he could tell us if these particular hydrangeas came in different colors, or if they were all the same. He looked puzzled for a moment and then answered, "I believe they just come in green."
If I decide I need a part time job, I bet I could work at the plant store! Think of the discount I could get! And apparently, no gardening experience required. Perfect.
Happy Spring!

lol! Poor kid. Please tell me it was a kid that said that, please!

I love the signs! Lauryn is so cute! They both are. I love that they love being outside with Brent. I can't get Craig to do the yard work other than the obligatory mowing, but you can bet Hayden loves to be outside working on cars with daddy! My happy place is the barn. Maybe Reagan will share that with me. Two mechanics in the family should be enough, right?
